Not only did the phoenicians worship their own gods, the gods from many other ancient civilisations such as the Egyptians, Romans and Greeks managed to make their way into the phoenicians temples. It is said that all the ancient civilisation all share very similar gods, however the stories differ slightly between them. Below are some examples of the Phoenicians main Gods/Goddesses.
Astarte - Astarte is the goddess of heaven and fertility. Her most common symbol was a crescent moon. Whenever you see pictures of her, she is almost always naked. It is said that this is because she symbolised fertility and sexuality. She is always wearing her headdress with two horns. When couples were wanting to conceive a child, they would worship Astarte for the blessing of having a child. They would also worship her on behalf of loved ones passing away in hope they would be accepted into heaven.
Adon(is) - Adonis is the demigod of beauty and desire (he also represents death and rebirth). Adonis also features heavily in greek mythology and was the lover of Aphrodite. To the Phoenicians, Adonis was deeply in love with a goddess names Astarte. Although the story of Adonis is also seen in Greek mythology, the stories differ slightly. Every year, the Phoenicians would mark the day of Adonis' death by having a big celebration. They believed that red poppies grew every year marking the spot that his blood flowed.
Melqart - King of the underworld. He also protected sailors and trade. The phoenician people would go to worship Melqart if the were close to dying so that the would have permission to enter the underworld. They would also go to worship Melqart if they were to travel overseas or trade things overseas.
Baal/El- Baal was the main god as he was god of the universe. He and his son, Melqart, also symbolised the annual cycle of vegetation and so he was heavily worshiped in order for the phoenicians to have crops to grow. Baal was also associated with Astarte and she is believed to be the mother of Melqart.
